Who We Are
The Church of the Living God, Culverhouse had its beginning in 1928 as the Church of the Living, P.G.T. (Pillar and Ground of Truth). It was organized under the leadership of the late Elder H. Adams. This early group of believers was a very devout and devoted membership. As the church grew numerically different places of worship were utilized to accommodate the increase in numbers. Many pastors serve this church effectually. In July 1981, the Pillar and Ground of Truth group voted to join the Christian Workers For Fellowship (C.W.F.F.) Brotherhood.
In 1993, our present pastor, Overseer Earl Whitaker came to serve this family of believers. The church has continued to grow and mature under his pastorate. The church has made several additions and upgrades to this facility. Our plans are, by the help and grace of God, to construct a new Worship and Word Center soon. We believe in exalting ministry in every thing we do. Our pastor believes strongly in equipping the saints for ministry and edifying the body of Christ. As we exalt Christ, equip and edify the saints evangelism will results. Jesus Christ came to serve, seek and save that which was lost. We desire to minister and serve the total family and total man.
Culverhouse is a Mecca of Ministry. Our church’s Statement of Purpose is: “To minister to all mankind, purposing to bring all to Christ, equipping the saints for ministry while truly worshiping our Father and demonstrating covenant provided Authority.” More pointedly, our mission statement is; “On Mission with God”; Being His Presence in the World.” We have a program of ministries designed to carry out our stated purpose. The Sunday worship experience begins at 9:00 a.m. with Sunday School. We have a dynamic worship service each Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. The Sunday Worship experience ends 5:30 p.m. with Sunday evening service, or with what we call “Family Time,” TBA. Young Peoples’ Progressive Union, or (Y.P.P.U.) meets each Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Our Brotherhood meets at 6:00 p.m., and Women’s Ministry meets at 5:30 p.m. each Tuesday, followed by Choir Rehearsal at 7:00 p.m. Our weekly ministry is anchored by Prayer and Bible Study on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. and prayer at 6:00 a.m. each Saturday.
Many people are hurting: physically, mentally and socially. The church is Divinely designed to minister to all people in every area in their life. We believe in strong families. Putting family values first evidences this belief. Strong families are the result of marriages that are strong and stable. The church provides marriage counseling by Certified Marriage Counselors and an ongoing Marriage Enrichment Course for all couples. We provide conferences and workshops annually for enhancing our family members in their God given roles and relationships. Also, we are grateful to God for allowing us to have a Television Ministry that’s aired each Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m. on the Fox channel. As our church family continues to grow we will focus our attention most assuredly on in care (members’ needs) and outreach (community needs).
Culverhouse desires to make a difference in this city and our community. It is our purpose to show that God loves everyone. He has demonstrated that love in the most profound way possible. God sent His only begotten Son and allowed Him to die vicariously by cruel crucifixion for our sins. That’s love!
The mission of the church is to take that message to the masses, as we help the hurting and feed the hungry. We will continue to reach out to all with the love of our Christ and God, until He comes.
This is our pledge.
